What size should a round pen be?

The most common and versatile sizes are 50–60 feet in diameter.

  • 40 feet: Suitable for turnout or basic handling
  • 50 feet: Good for starting young horses and controlled groundwork
  • 60 feet: Industry standard for most training, groundwork, and riding
    Larger than 70 feet is not recommended as it can lessen control and rider-horse connection.
What footing is best?

Safety and comfort are important. Check for level ground, no holes or rocks, and use footing that isn’t too hard or slippery, such as sand or specially prepared surfaces.

Do panel shape and strength matter in a round pen?

Yes. Square-corner (“horse safe”) panels are favored because rounded corners create gaps where hooves and tack can get caught. The weight and sturdiness of panels should match the work (light for broke horses; heavy-duty for young or excitable horses).

Is a larger pen always better?

No. Bigger than 70 feet can reduce control and communication; smaller than 40 feet is too confining for riding and even advanced groundwork.
